» A New National Covenant of the McCain GOP
By Rob Graham | Published 02/13/2008 | Top Stories , Publisher's Notes , Political , Financial , Community | Unrated
John McCain is headed for defeat in November. He has won over 40 percent of the Republican party, but will likely face a political rock star in Barack Obama who will not lose a single Democratic vote and might even get some Republican cross-overs. A McCain defeat will be devastating for the GOP and a last embarrassing blow to a once proud coalition of religious, financial and military conservatives.

To avert this loss, Senator McCain, with the help of prominent conservatives, needs to make a New National Covenant filled with new ideas and a definition of conservatism.
» Unemployment Rate, Living Wage, and the Working Poor
By Jonathan H. Westover | Published 12/14/2007 | Letters to the Editor , Financial , Community | Unrated
A quick scan of Utah unemployment rate data for the last 30 years shows that our current unemployment rate of 2.5% is comparatively very low and something we should be proud of (as there are consistently higher numbers of Utahans involved in the labor market, by percentage of population, than most anywhere else in the rest of the country—working more jobs, with longer hours).  However, despite the very low unemployment rate, Utah also has a problem with low wages, which this translates into a greater number of working poor.  In other words, there is still work to do.

Wages are generally low in the state, due to many factors, such as cost of living and various labor market characteristics, and though I do not expect Utah employers to increase wages out of the goodness of their hearts, there is hope.  With such a low level of unemployment, there is a corresponding small available unemployed labor pool searching for work.  And anyone who has taken basic economics will know this means firms are increasingly competing for a shrinking number of available workers, and with a shortage in the supply of workers, wages will likely go up.

So let's keep up the good work Utahans!  Hopefully our willingness to work will make wages for all in the state more livable.

By Beehive Standard Weekly | Published 11/2/2006 | Religion , Financial , ALL NEWS HEADLINES | Unrated
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - This year will your favorite retailer be wishing you Happy Holidays?  If so, they are ignoring the "reason for the season." As Christmas is a Christian holiday, one website is doing its part to put the birth of Christ back into the holiday.

One Christian soul is trying to change the non-Christian focus of some retailers by encouraging support of those retailers who are actively using  the  "Merry Christmas" slogan in lieu of "Happy Holidays.
» Tri-State Transportation Plan Necessary for Vegas Valley
By Rob Graham | Published 05/15/2006 | Travel , Publisher's Notes , Political , Financial , Community | Unrated
It is estimated that nearly 3,000 people make the commute from St. George and Cedar City, Utah to Las Vegas on a daily basis.  As you get closer to Las Vegas, the number of commuting suburbanites grows significantly and the future will create a real problem for Las Vegas Valley planners if it is not addressed now rather than later.
» Costco Vs. Wal-Mart. Placing Value in Employees.

Do corporations face a trade-off between seeking greater efficiency and higher profits with implementing more employee friendly corporate policy?  Are these actually mutually exclusive goals?  Taking a brief look at two competing big-box retailers may shed a little light on the answer to these questions.
