Romney Wins With or Without VP Spot
By leaving the GOP nomination in a timely fashion, Mitt Romney is poised to win with or without a spot on the McCain ticket. Though Romney is certainly hoping to join the ticket as John McCain's presidential running mate, if he is not chosen, he is clearly the leading candidate going into the next election cycle, whether that is in four or eight years. CHOOSING ROMNEY John McCain won the presidential nomination fair and square. The problem for McCain is that he didn't win over conservatives, he split them between Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney. In a sense, McCain's win happened only because he split the financial and evangelical base of the party. McCain clearly won the national defense component of the party, but that will not win him the White House -- especially during a time of an unpopular war. Times have changed since the last primary for John McCain. America has slipped into financial chaos. If McCain were to run today against Mitt Romney, a well known financial fix-it man, Romney would win two out of three contests. Earlier the Iraq War was still front and center, whereas today the economy is the most important issue to voters. McCain has many choices in a vice presidential selection, but none so credible in speaking on financial matters than Mitt Romney. In short, McCain can choose a social conservative along the lines of Mike Huckabee or Sam Brownback for his running mate and try to recapture the far right-wing of the party or he can choose a social conservative who looses many on the far right, but competes strongly in the middle in states such as Massachusetts and Michigan. One can argue that by choosing Huckabee or Brownback, McCain can capture a few of the southern states such as Georgia or Tennessee, but those states are not considered big prizes in the overall scheme of things. For instance, by selecting Huckabee, McCain might win in Georgia, but that would probably cost him deeply in the southwestern states such as Arizona and Nevada where McCain must have the Mormon vote to win the day. In short, he would pick up one state and probably lose another. The same would be true for Brownback who as a very conservative Christian may also be seen as anti-Mormon. Brownback's lack of national name recognition is also a problem for McCain. Governor Charlie Crist is seen as a much better candidate for the VP spot, but his association nets no improvement for McCain. He also has some significant negatives. When Romney supporter Jeb Bush and other popular personalities stayed on the sidelines, Crist made a late endorsement of McCain. Romney supporters may hold a grudge as that move was seen by many as what stopped Romney's momentum going into California. Many were shocked that the leader of the GOP in Florida would endorse any candidate in a close field and would be seen in retrospect as a payoff by Crist to win the VP nomination should he ascend to that position on the ticket. The obvious choice would be to select Crist and hope to persuade those in the southwest that he is a man that will represent their interests. Clearly, Crist has conservative credentials and would make a good choice, but he has one glaring weakness. He once knew a girl named Rebecca O'Dell Wharrie -- and we mean "knew" in the Biblical sense. During the last gubernatorial race, a fax was sent to the local newspapers anonymously showing that in 1989 Crist had signed an affidavit disclaiming the parentage of child being place up for adoption by Wharrie. The obvious issue is that he had been engaged in sexual activity with Wharrie only 18 years earlier and was a putative father to a child outside of any marriage. Wharrie was a Republican operative at the time. The question of whether Crist was actually the father was put into play in the campaign. Though Crist was able to overcome the slur in Florida's election, it would not help his case in a national election as it tends to show that Crist was irresponsible in his personal life and perhaps even abandoned a child and that child's mother in favor of politics. That leaves only one squeaky-clean candidate left standing. Mitt Romney. It is clear that Romney was unable to hold his weight in the south when running against Mike Huckabee. Many far-right wing evangelicals have a great deal of distrust for Romney who they assert changed his position on abortion and cannot be trusted; however, the real issue is Romney's religion. As a Mormon, far-right wing evangelicals have been taught that he is closer to the devil than Hugh Hefner. Romney cannot be counted on to win over most of these voters. Nothing he does or says short of joining the Southern Baptist Convention will sway this group. Even then, he would be accused of flip-flopping on religion. As a life-long member of the Mormon faith, Romney is more likely to fly to North Korea and make a pledge of allegiance to a lunatic than change his family's faith. That leaves McCain with a very messy selection. Choosing a social conservative will lose the southwest and offend many in the middle. Choosing Crist ends up being neutral and potentially explosive and choosing Romney looses the far-right Republicans. Romney has few if any skeletons in his closet. In many ways he was the perfect, and as a result sometimes boring, candidate. He has a long-term marriage, a good family, a moral foundation, an excellent leadership track record and executive experience. The only drawbacks are his religion and his change of position on abortion. On abortion, his record as a pro-life advocate is strong, but he had a pro-choice position while he was running for governor of Massachusetts. Like Ronald Reagan, when Romney was faced with actual policy decisions that would result in the loss of a child's life, he ultimately chose life and has not turned away since. The abortion tag is a red-herring. The only real problem for Romney is his religion. Does McCain dare to lose the far-right of his party in exchange for winning over more people in the middle? McCain's choice will be made by Barrack Obama. Depending upon who Obama picks as a running mate, McCain may have few other choices than Romney. Obama will have to choose a running mate with military experience who is also a middle-ground conservative. Obama will have difficulty is swaying enough people in the middle over to his side during the general election. Like Romney's religion, Obama's color is going to lose him votes. It may not be a significant number of votes, but Obama is dealing with the same issue of bigotry as Romney. On the one hand, some voters in the white Democratic population will not trust a black man who has not served in the military and has a Muslim name. Likewise, some Republicans will not trust a Mormon. In both cases, competency and character cannot overcome strongly held bigoted beliefs of some voters. But Obama is leading his ticket whereas Romney would only be on the second spot on McCain's ticket. If McCain can convince the far-right that he will protect abortion rights and keep the Mormon in mostly an administrative role, he will win over more of the right than Obama will lose in the middle. In short, McCain will win the Democrats in the middle who will not vote for Obama because of his lack of military experience, Muslim name and the color of his skin. Obama's selection of a number-two man with military experience will not win the day because that person is no better or worse than the dozens of generals who can advise Obama. McCain's military experience would win the day because he would be the Commander-in-Chief. Some may argue that Romney's financial background is no better than the President's dozens of financial advisers, but that is where the argument against Romney breaks down because Romney is, in fact, better than the dozens of financial advisers. Not only is he a triple-A financial genius, but he is also a man who has sat in the executive seat and has a proven track record of turning large governments and dysfunctional organizations around. Very few "advisers" have that real life experience. As the economy is the top election issue, Romney's position on the ticket would be clear. It will be his job to fix the economy as McCain works on the substantial problems with foreign policy and military conflicts -- which is his primary role as the Commander-in-Chief. As Romney turns the economy around, he builds the resume that he needs to ascend to the presidency in due time. In the interim, he serves diligently under President McCain. Some may question whether a strong leader like Romney has enough humility to support a former rival. This question was answered when Romney exited the nomination process in a timely fashion. Only a few short weeks later he endorsed McCain and has been a strong advocate and fundraiser for his candidacy ever since. Huckabee is a comical contrast of loyalty. The message from Romney to McCain was simple: "I will follow and support until it is my time" IF ROMNEY IS LEFT OFF If Mitt Romney is left off the ticket, he will be one of McCain's strongest campaigners. He will use the opportunity to meet dedicated Republicans across the nation and use these relationships to solidify his future candidacy. Romney convinced many through the years that he could be trusted and relied upon, but his name recognition and unfamiliarity to the masses caused the larger voting population to withhold their support. With support thrown behind the candidate, he will be the obvious champion going into the next election cycle. This is the same strategy McCain used and it paid back dividends resulting in his current nomination. No one can predict the future, but without Romney on the ticket, it appears more likely than not that McCain will have difficulty in getting into the White House. Short of getting a populist running mate of substance like Colin Powell, McCain's other choices appear weak in national name recognition and political power. If that proves out, and Romney is not selected as the running mate, then Romney is positioned to be the putative nominee in four years. Assuming Obama prevails, then entering into the presidency with so many significant problems, Senator Obama will need the skills of men like Mitt Romney, but few will want to associate with a candidate who is so skinny on experience. No one doubts the Senator's brain power, but he doesn't have the true know-how. If he is ultimately elected, his lack of experience in such difficult times will result in two years of crisis management and two years of rebuilding. Sadly for Americans, without the skillset and experience of men like Romney, his learning-as-you-go approach will be inadequate and he will be facing a very angry public in four years, regardless if he eventually "gets it." Facing even worse economic times, Romney will be the putative candidate of the general electorate as few if any men of financial weight will come out from the Democratic party in four years. Given four years, Romney will be in the driver's seat as he can pick apart the economic policies of Obama from an observer's perspective -- where he can do no wrong while rebuilding the Republican base. Romney's job, if not VP, is to put the party back together again. His reward will be the job to fix the economy starting in 2012.

Your analysis must of taken you months to prepare. Trying to make Mitt Romney look good is a chore. I can not for the life of me figure out why you only covered Abortion and Religion as his only two negatives. There are many, many, many more.
Romney was Governor of Massachusetts when they became the FIRST state to legalize Gay Marriage. THE FIRST!!!
Romney not only campaigned as Pro-Choice as Governor of Liberal Massachusetts but also donated his "hard earned" money to Planned Parenthood.
Romney's Socialist Health-care system provides 50 co-pay abortions. Is also turning out to be a huge financial burden to Massachusetts. Guess his triple-A financial skills took a break on that one.
Romney turned around the Olympics by turning it into one of the largest PORK projects in American history. Another lapse in his triple-A financial skills.
Romney raised "FEES" and other taxes by 750 million his first year in office as Governor. Yet another lapse in his triple-A financial skills.
Massachusetts economy finished 48th best in the nation under Romney. Shot his triple-A financial skills all to hell on that one, huh?
Romney made his millions by buying up failing companies, selling off pieces of the that company, laying off employees, and then selling the rest. This was not true in every case but was true in several of them.
Romney promised Michigan autoworkers federal assistance if they would vote for him. Since when is this a Conservative stance?
Romney, by his own words in a Chris Wallace interview, locked his dog Seamus in an "air-tight" kennel on top of their car for a 12 hour trip. Since when have dogs been able to hold their breath for 12 hours?
Romney can argue the meaning of the word "SAW" almost as well as Bill Clinton argued the meaning of the word "IS".
I could continue this all day but the point is this, Romney will never be President or Vice President, even if McCain chooses him because they will lose by 10 points. The South will not vote for this Elitist, especially when he is shoved down our throats by Hannity, Limbaugh, Coulter, O'Reilly, FOXNEWS, Karl Rove, and others. This just simply demonstrates what their priorities are and greed is at the top of the list.

This whole article is wishful thinking, Romney is going down in 2012 if Senator McCain loses. The only way I see Romney winning is if he buys a house in every state.

What a great article! I could not agree more!! Romney should be the first name on the ticket but the country blew it so VP would be the next best thing. It would be wonderful to see him put his intelligence to work in Washington.

Very well written ariticle. Right on all counts.
I really just want to respond to Comment #1 (Posted by Joseph):
"Romney was Governor of Massachusetts when they became the FIRST state to legalize Gay Marriage. THE FIRST!!!" -and he fought it like crazy through the whole process!!!!!!
"Romney not only campaigned as Pro-Choice as Governor of Liberal Massachusetts but also donated his "hard earned" money to Planned Parenthood." -true. So you don't like it when people examine the issue and change thier mind? I like it when people take the time the expolore an argument, and then come down on my side, which Romney did. He was given awards by Pro-Life groups for the things he DID as governor, and not for the things that he once said.
"Romney's Socialist Health-care system provides 50 co-pay abortions. Is also turning out to be a huge financial burden to Massachusetts." - The abortion line was a standard in Mass., and he admitted all along that it wasn't perfect.
"Romney turned around the Olympics by turning it into one of the largest PORK projects in American history. Another lapse in his triple-A financial skills." - Here's where you really just start pissing me off. That is an out right lie. He took a huge deficit and made a surplus. Where is the PORK in that?!
"Romney raised "FEES" and other taxes by 750 million his first year in office as Governor. Yet another lapse in his triple-A financial skills." - so what? He never raised taxes, and he left a rainy day fund where a huge deficit was before.
"Massachusetts economy finished 48th best in the nation under Romney. Shot his triple-A financial skills all to hell on that one, huh?" -And it was far better when he left than when he came in.
"Romney made his millions by buying up failing companies, selling off pieces of the that company, laying off employees, and then selling the rest. This was not true in every case but was true in several of them." - Sometimes if you don't cut part off, the whole thing dies. Better to save what you can. Your arguments really make me tired.
"Romney promised Michigan autoworkers federal assistance if they would vote for him. Since when is this a Conservative stance?" -Helping out the auto industry helps out the american economy in general. If the auto industry dies, that would be a huge hit that would ripple across the country. Conservatives don't ignore stuff like that. They are just smarter about where and how to spend money.
"Romney, by his own words in a Chris Wallace interview, locked his dog Seamus in an "air-tight" kennel on top of their car for a 12 hour trip. Since when have dogs been able to hold their breath for 12 hours?" - You are a liar. It was not "air-tight". It had a wind shield. Romney and his sons all said that the dog enjoyed it. It just got sick on this one occasion. If the dog hated it, there probably would not have been multiple trips. The key here is that you keep bringing this up like it's some dirty scandal from his past. Do you not see how squeeky clean this guy is?!?!?
"Romney can argue the meaning of the word "SAW" almost as well as Bill Clinton argued the meaning of the word "IS"." -If this is in reference to his father marching with Martin Luther King, Jr, well do your research. Romney Sr. was a champion of the civil rights movement, and Mitt's comments were not out of line at all.
You could continue your drivel all day, but the point is that Romney has the potential to be one of the greatest presidents this country has ever seen. And now we know that you just a crazy liberal when you bash every influential conservative talk radio personality because they all love this guy. "Hannity, Limbaugh, Coulter, O'Reilly, FOXNEWS, Karl Rove, and others." You even mention greed to cap it off. SHUT UP! Romney spent HIS OWN money, then didn't even ask for donations to help with the debt, as so many others do. VP or otherwise, Romney is the future of the republican party, and I love it!

I agree competely with this article.
I understand when liberals hate on this guy. What I don't like to see is when Republicans start bashing him.
I agree that the abortion thing is just a red harring. The only reasons I can see why you would not love Romney are if you are liberal, homosexual (he is against discrimination of gays, but not at all for gay marriage), or a religious bigot. Nothing else makes sense. Unfortunately, far too many of Huckabee's more vocal supports constantly exposed their religious bigotry. Sad commentary for a nation that was built on religious tolerance.

I couldn't agree more wholeheartedly with "Joseph" because each point taken by "Joseph" can be substantiated!!! Those of us who are the conservative base do not trust this flip-flopper! The majority of us (and polls prove this to be true) want MIKE HUCKABEE to be chosen as the v.p. McCain will lose without Huck's presence on the ticket...We trust Huck; we admire his honesty; we are ENERGIZED by his message and his personality..because, guess what? McCain isn't energizing us one iota! McCain NEEDS Mike to make sure Obama doesn't make any in-roads in the southern, conservative states that Mike handily won in the primaries. IT IS A NO-BRAINER, McCain! PICK MIKE HUCKABEE-a winning team!!!

Romney was the Number ONE opponent of legalizing gay marriage in Massachusetts. NUMBER ONE!
Mitt Romney never donated any money to planned parenthood. His wife Anne did on two occasions in the early 90's. He never did. Also the quotation marks around "hard earned" money is cute and seems to imply he didn't actually work for that money but he did. Every penny.
The co-pay on abortions has nothing to do with his plan and is required under laws passed by the democratic congess in Mass.
Your comment about the Olympics is stupid and makes no sense. How is that in any way a lapse in his financial skills?
He never raised TAXES at all ever! The fees apply only to specific types of things that people can choose to engage in or not.
They were the 50th best economy in the nation before Romney
Yes the COMPANIES he bought chose to lay off employees in order to save the company and thus SAVE EVERYONE ELSES JOBS.
Your other comments are ridiculous and not worth responding to.

America really missed a chance to elect a great man president when Romney bowed out. The criticism we read above is classic ignorant bitterness. It just proves that many people can't see a great opportunity if it's right in front of their face. Romney is highly qualified in all aspects (executive ability, moral fortitude, physical strength, excellent judgement, shall I go on...?) If he joins the ticket with McCain, we have some hope for the future. If not, I'll go underground for a few years.

Is this a comedy blog? Mitt Romney squeaky clean? Have you been living under a rock? Rush, Laura, Sean were all smitten by Mitt Romney but they failed to research the legacy of Mitt Romney under which the citizens of Massachusetts are still suffering, Gay marriage, Socialistic Universal health care, sky high fees, abortions paid for by the state ( gee thanks Mitt) and a gigantic budget shortfall. Romney cannot even decide on which side of an issue to be on..hence the nickname flip-flop mitt. If Romney is VP, the republicans can bend over and kiss their butts good bye..

It is amusing to me to read the emotional logic that people use to justify their candidate or to bash the other candidates. I am mostly referring to Joseph's comments, but also, to any voter who idolizes a candidate (or hates a candidate) to the point that logic goes out the window. I found this article to be very well thought out and most of the points to be very logical. There were a few arguments that stretched logic a little bit (or ignored certain facts), but mostly very well done. I just wish Joseph (and those like him on both sides of the aisle) would take a deep breath and realize that each candidate has good and bad qualities. If everybody used logic, instead of emotion, to pick a candidate, Obama would not stand a chance in 08;. Not that Obama doesn't have some good qualities, but his main reason for winning the primaries is because he was able to get voters to vote based on emotion rather than logic. Romney and others (like Clinton) thought that they could win by presenting their stances in a calm and logical way. Obama proved that if you shout loud enough into the microphone and repeat certain catch phrases over and over, people will act illogically. As proof of my point, look back to what happened to Clinton when she cried at an event . . . voters got emotional and handed her a victory. Not all of our country's voters are this illogical . . . , but just enough.

This is a response to Joseph:
Romney was Governor of Massachusetts when they became the FIRST state to legalize Gay Marriage. THE FIRST!!!
Massachusetts would have been the first state to legalize gay marriage even if Mitt were not the Governor. Also, gay marriage was legalized by the Massachusetts Supreme Court, not by the legislature, and certainly not be Mitt. Mitt did all he could to stop it, and limited gay marriage as much as he could legally, such as only allowing Massachusetts couples to get married under the court order, and not allowing gay marriages to people from other states, refusing to take the husband and wife section off the official marriage license, etcetera. This was an erroneous argument against Mitt by some primary opponents, such as Mike Huckabees camp (Huckabee himself said nothing on the matter, but his supporters aggressively promoted this idea). But ultimately it is a false and misleading argument, and immediately shows your bias.
Romney not only campaigned as Pro-Choice as Governor of Liberal Massachusetts but also donated his "hard earned" money to Planned Parenthood.
Romney did switch his stance on abortion as is well documented. And no one would seriously argue that he was ever a staunch pro choicer. In fact, when he ran against Ted Kennedy in 1994, he was endorsed by the Massachusetts pro life groups. To humanize his position a little but, the reason he was originally pro choice was shaped by an incident in his extended family. When he was younger, a family member died during a botched illegal abortion. This shaped his view in his early years, but ultimately, after deep examination, he evolved into what it is today. As a small matter, Mitt did not donate to PP, but his wife did.
Romney's Socialist Health-care system provides 50 co-pay abortions. Is also turning out to be a huge financial burden to Massachusetts. Guess his triple-A financial skills took a break on that one.
Again, grossly misleading. The co-pay abortions are a result of the overwhelmingly democratic state legislature, not Mitt. To argue otherwise is simply false.
Romney turned around the Olympics by turning it into one of the largest PORK projects in American history. Another lapse in his triple-A financial skills.
This was an argument put forth by McCain during the primary season. A simple examination of the bottom line of the Olympics shows a different story. The vast majority of Government spending went for infrastructure upgrades that would have been needed anyway. Mitt just successfully argued that if public funds were going to be spent for infrastructure anyways, they should be spent before the games not after. The next highest pricetag went to security. This was due to the fact that the Olympics were held about 6 months after 9/11/2001. Even taking all this into account, the amount of money that came from public funds for the Salt Lake Olympics were in line with what public funds were used for other Olympics. By virtually every measure, the Salt Lake Olympics were a resounding financial and cultural success, and Mitt had a large part in making that happen.
Romney raised "FEES" and other taxes by 750 million his first year in office as Governor. Yet another lapse in his triple-A financial skills.
This is an argument that keeps surfacing to take attention away from the fact that Mitt erased an annual budget deficit of 3 billion dollars without raising taxes. It is funny to see how the amount the fees were raised keeps growing as this argument persists. Some of the fees that were raised had not been adjusted for 30 years, and were inappropriately low. If you are examining Mitts financial skills, you should look at the deficit that Mitt was facing when he took over, and what he did with it. The budget was balanced in the first year. Some of that money did come from increased fees, but nowhere in the range of the 750 million claimed. And the deficit was erased without raising taxes, which everyone at the time said that he would have to do. If you look at the full record, that is some pretty amazing financial wizardry.
Massachusetts economy finished 48th best in the nation under Romney. Shot his triple-A financial skills all to hell on that one, huh?
No one would seriously argue that Massachusetts has the 48th best economy in the U.S. What figure are you actually looking at? When Mitt took over, there were single digits in the pipeline of companies that we considering expanding in or moving to Massachusetts. When he left the pipeline had increased nearly ten fold.
Romney made his millions by buying up failing companies, selling off pieces of the that company, laying off employees, and then selling the rest. This was not true in every case but was true in several of them.
Brookstone, Domino's Pizza, DoubleClick , HCA, Sealy, The Sports Authority, Toys R Us, Unisource, Staples, etcetera. Your argument is just stupid. It seams you are assigning traits to Mitt from a movie character you once saw.
Romney promised Michigan autoworkers federal assistance if they would vote for him. Since when is this a Conservative stance?
Romney did not promise autoworkers federal assistance. Romney pointed out that his plan to stimulate development of alternative energy as part of his energy policy would help U.S. autoworkers.
Romney, by his own words in a Chris Wallace interview, locked his dog Seamus in an "air-tight" kennel on top of their car for a 12 hour trip. Since when have dogs been able to hold their breath for 12 hours?
This issue you refer to is pretty irrelevant. But you answer your own assumed question. Since the dog was able to breath for twelve hours, it was not locked into an "airtight" container, but lived a long, happy, healthy life.
Romney can argue the meaning of the word "SAW" almost as well as Bill Clinton argued the meaning of the word "IS".
If you are referring to when Mitt said that he saw his father march with Dr. Martin Luther King as a child, it is you who is parsing words, not Mitt. George Romney, Mitts father, marched on many occasions for Dr. King. It is documented that he did march at least once with Dr. King, at Medgar Evers funeral in Washington D.C. Romney also lead a march of 10 thousand people in Detroit when he was governor in solidarity with Dr. King during the marches and violence in Selma. There are also several eyewitness accounts of a march in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, but there is no record of this in the newspaper record of the time. Just in books referencing the march. George Romney by any account was one of the strongest supporters and earliest supporters of civil rights in American politics. Just look at quotes by Dr King about George Romney. In light of all this information, how does Mitts statement not hold up, and how is it misleading?
I could continue this all day but the point is this, Romney will never be President or Vice President, even if McCain chooses him because they will lose by 10 points. The South will not vote for this Elitist, especially when he is shoved down our throats by Hannity, Limbaugh, Coulter, O'Reilly, FOXNEWS, Karl Rove, and others. This just simply demonstrates what their priorities are and greed is at the top of the list.
This is your only point that actually puts forth an arguable point. Notwithstanding your bias against Mitt, I think he would help the ticket. Probably not in the south, but I have a hard time thinking that Obama is going to win in the south anyway, with the possible exception of Virginia. I also think that Florida is now not in play for the Democrats. Mitt helps in Midwest states like Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota (probably not Ohio though). He also helps in the west in such states as New Mexico and Nevada, and may bring Oregon into play. A southerner would help in none of these battleground areas, again, with the exception of Virgina. If we have to use the VP slot to bolster the South, then we are going to lose anyway.

Do you remember why Huckabee was #6 on Judicial Watchs list of the Ten Most Wanted Corrupt Politicians of 2007? Huckabees career has been colored by 14 ethics complaints and a volley of questions about his integrity, ranging from his management of campaign cash to his use of a nonprofit organization to subsidize his income to his destruction of state computer files on his way out of the governors office. And what was Governor Huckabees response to these ethics allegations? Rather than cooperating with investigators, Huckabee sued the state ethics commission twice and attempted to shut the ethics process down.
In 2006, when Huckabee was governor of Arkansas the Cato Institute gave him an F on his term for several reasons; chief among them insisting on raising taxes at almost every turn throughout his final term. The article notes that Huckabee was the only presidential candidate AGAINST school choice. See: http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=8838
In 2006, the Club for Growth revealed the habitual tax-hiking of Huckabee: He signed a three cent gas tax increase in 1999, called for a state sales tax hike in 200, signed a 25-cent cigarette tax hike in 2003, allowed a major tax hike package to pass in 2004. He increased spending 65.3% from 1996 to 2004. (Tax and spending info provided by Americans for Tax Reform)
During his years as governor, Huckabee granted clemency to convicted criminals an average of about once every four days. (http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=3976341)
FLIP FLOPPER Huckabee pushed for in-state college tuition breaks and scholarships for illegals. http://myclob.pbwiki.com/HuckabeeLies Now, he claims hes all for controlling the borders and ousting illegals.
FLIP-FLOPPER Huckabee supported a federal smoking ban and now no longer supports it. http://hotair.com/archives/2008/01/15/pandermania-huckabee-no-longer-supports-federal-smoking-ban/
How about Huckabees negative ad against Romney that was cleared to air - didnt air - but aired for the press? And Huckabees Christmas ad with the floating cross? Ed Rollins, former Huckabee campaign manager, has admitted that the floating cross and negative ad that wasnt etc., were all really ploys to get free media - which means that HUCKABEE WAS LYING ALL ALONG. (http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/news/huckabees_notsodivine_intervention_84634.asp?c=rss)
What about Mikes bigoted statements about Romneys religion? (too many sources to list)
What about the open letter advertisement to Senator McCain by Huckabee supporters warning him not to choose Romney for VP and their NoMittforVP website ? http://www.govnotgod.org/pdfs/NoMittPrescottAZ.pdf Huckabee admits having received an email about it before it was published but claims he had nothing to do with it. Huckabee also said of the anti-Romney ad that he has no position on it one way or the other. Many believe Huckabee had a finger or two in this ad.
Huckabees recent statements that he didnt try to buy the presidency and thats a good thing are still meant to smear Romney. He just cant give it up.
Mitt Romney SHARES the same conservative values as evangelicals. His ACTIONS have proven it. Romney can help our crippled nation economically. His very life is one long list of accomplishments of DOING. ROMNEY IS A GOOD MAN AND WANTS TO HELP OUR CONSERVATIVE CAUSE. HES ON THE SAME SIDE AS EVANGELICALS. We need him as Veep for many reasons! Here are just a few: to rectify wasteful government spending, get us on the right track for energy independence, eliminate titanic trade deficits, do away with ineffective federal bureaucracies, streamline current federal programs so we actually get what we pay for, help grow small businesses, encourage off-shore companies to return to the states, close our gaping open-gate borders, clean up our public debt to China and Japan, and do something about our devalued U.S. dollar that cheapens U.S. assets.

I will not vote for John McCain unless he has someone I like on the ticket. That someone would be Romney! However, being power hungry man that John McCain is he probably wouldn't let Romney do anything... So I am torn..

I agree wholeheartedly with this article. I think it sad that anyone interested in the feedback on this article has to see the comments of responder #1 first as he does NOT represent opinions of most readers - not to mention accuracy.
Reading this article gave me hope. I am very concerned about our economy. I am very concerned about a safe and prosperous America under Obama and if McCain were to choose Romney as his VP, it could really turn things around for the better.

Responding to Roberto. Huckabee? You have got to be kidding, right? He is a devisive opportunist that lies through his teeth in public. I'll move to Canada before I vote for him on any ticket. I want a man I can trust in the white house. I wouldn't trust Huckabee with a dead cockroach.

The writer likes bush very much. Bush likes romney very much. Therefore the writer feels a very stron pressure to like romney very much. But there are a lot americans who don't feel this pressure at all.

I agree with your article 100%. I am a Californian who also saw Mitt Romney as strong brilliant candidate that could have cleaned up the mess we are in today. I voted for Romney in the California primary. To this day, I am shocked and disappointed that Californias Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, endorsed McCain and not Romney. I am even more disappointed with my fellow Californias on how they voted. Romney and Paul were the only candidates (Democratic and Republican) who demonstrated any knowledge and understanding about the economy and the falling dollar. I am surprised so many Americans (especially Californians) voted for a candidate that was weak on the economy and weak on illegal immigration in the first place. I hope McCain does the right thing and selects Romney as his Vice President.

GOD BLESS AMERICA. AND PLEASE HURRY!
Rob, your article is very enlightening! I had not given it sufficient thought in this direction, but you are correct. Romney does win with or without the VP spot because of how he has proceeded. Although, with all the praise McCain is giving Romney at this time, he may just get the nod. If not, as you indicate, Romney has positioned himself well and will still move forward. Romney potentially wins either way.
I'm sure one of Romney's reasons for his extraordinary success throughout his life is his incredible resilience! That was witnessed in his energized campaign, when most would have been tremendously discouraged in the way he was defeated at the last moment in Iowa. It looked like towards the end he was destined to win after pouring so much of his time and resources into that state, which I believe would have given him that strategized momentum to carry him all the way to victory.
Ironically, the evangelists who voted against Romney because of his faith are some of the very American citizens deeply yearning for this kind of leader. Many just don't know it. Those who think Romney belongs to some sort of "cult" need to take an HONEST look at his religion. It's about as far from a cult as one can get. Anyone who knows a PRACTICING Mormon knows how ordinary they are, except perhaps that he or she might possibly stand out a little, but it would be in a good sort of way.
If certain evangelists (not all by any means, many religions defend the Mormons valiantly) will set aside the biases and misrepresentations they have heard about the Mormon religion and carefully investigate what Romney's faith really represents, as many have, they too will come away with a changed and less judgmental view, simply because they finally went to the SOURCE to get their answers. I believe Romney would have easily won Iowa if we as a people would not be so quick to believe everything we heard, especially if it is negative about someone or some group, before carefully finding out both sides.
Romney moved forward almost unflinchingly after being ambushed on his way to an expected Iowa victory. I consider (probably along with Laura Ingram and many others) that it was a ruse instigated by a disparate candidate running against him, pandering to the evangelists misinformed views of Romneys faith. Even though Romney poured all his heart and energy into Iowa for so long as the crucial state to win, since it would be the first to vote and would give him that much-needed momentum, he still appeared unscathed and optimistic as he got ready for New Hampshire after he lost to Huckabee. This illustrated a powerful example of his resilience.
Romney certainly showed resilience again after his disheartening loss in Florida. Crist's endorsement of McCain without Jeb Bush's public endorsement of Romney and without several others, which seemed to come at least indirectly later, would have helped at the time. Then there was also a past statement of Romney's on troop withdrawal in Iraq, which McCain raised and misconstrued at the last moment before Florida placed its vote. Afterwards, we again witnessed Romney resilience by bouncing back with remarkable strength and moving forward. And Florida was so crucial to Romney!
Lets face it, Romney does all he can to make things work, as he proved so impressively on his campaign trail. Hes the kind of guy you can give the worst hand to, and he will find every conceivable solution to make it work. Sufficient Americans need to discover this about Mitt Romney while he is in his prime time to help this nation succeed.
Perhaps where Romney shined so well was during the presidential debates when everyone seemed to gang up on him. Even one of the analysts who didn't like Romney, expressed how he thought Romney overwhelmingly won a particular debate because of his poise and resilience, when the others in the debate would attack him and almost only him, as if he were the frontrunner at the time. It's as if Romney could take them all on and still come out on top, unbloodied and showing his remarkably calm disposition even under heavy fire from nearly all sides, and on national television to boot!
There was nothing staged about Romneys poise. Poise cannot be staged. It is either there or not there. This moment of crises impressed many about Romney. Romney unwittingly proved to America how naturally well he can perform in a crisis with all those composed, yet rapid responses he gave to so many unfair attacks. This kind of composure and resilience to go to plan B when plan A has failed is what America needs in a strong leader.
I did some calling for Romney in Missouri when he was still in the race. I was surprised how some, who I randomly called, volunteered their opinions of how strongly they wanted Romney as president, because they felt he was the one experienced person who could actually turn this country around on the issues headed in the wrong direction. Of course, there is still an underlying greatness in this nation because of so many fundamentally good people.
It was absolutely amazing to see so many conservative talk show hosts and others rally around Romney at the last moment of his campaign and fight so adamantly for him when they began grasping what he could actually do for this country. There were so many almost unbelievable misfortunes of timing that prevented him from getting the nomination, which probably would have been his had there been just any one less big one.
I have this gut feeling that the Lord is preparing Romney for an even more critical time. Now some of you who do not realize just what Romney's potential is will disagree emphatically with this opinion. So be it. It's a free country. I respect your right to your opinion, just as I want you to respect mine, even if you disagree. Just please consider being kind in expressing it. This country needs more love, not hate. Also, do yourself and this country an important favor and read Hugh Hewitt's book, A Mormon in the White House?: 10 Things Every American Should Know About Mitt Romney.
I'm not saying Romney does not have any faults or does not make mistakes. He does. He just learns from them more quickly than most and turns failure into success more readily, as he has proven so many times, and in so many endeavors throughout his whole life. And he will continue to do so.
Those who have studied his background carefully, realize that this is his nature. Besides, I think he has a tremendous amount of experience and savvy in getting our country's economy back on track through his proven leadership. He has a proven system on how to figure things out and make them work and his bank account shows it. He is worth a lot monetarily because he has been so competent and effective. Hes not in this for the money. He was not paid when he oversaw the Olympics or the governorship of Massachusetts.
To the pundits and to all else, I say, "I believe and hope we will be pleasantly surprised with this man's greatness that will be discovered at a later time by more people, as he helps turn this country around for the better."
When I said at the beginning, "God bless America. And please hurry!," I know that God constantly blesses this great nation. He does it in spite of the corruption and ill-conceived laws that have been devolving in this country, such as abortion and same-sex marriage, which is radically different than human rights. And where are the human rights of the unborn, the ready-to-born, if there is a law that someone can abort the life of an innocent little girl or boy! Where is their say of whether they get to live or not? Will we some day pass a law that we can take the lives of another group of people if we so choose? Since God ordained life and marriage with certain bounds, then He should be the one to change those bounds, not us. If man the created the laws in the first place, then man could be the one to change them as he saw fit. Abortion and gay marriage are out of bounds, way out of bounds. How can our nation be blessed if tamper with such vital boundaries?
If we act intelligently and use common sense, we as a people will discern better and not vote for those politicians who take these fundamentally destructive positions, which demoralize and cripple our nation.
God will continue to bless this nation as we study the issues and elect those who care deeply about this country and its values. And yes, Mitt Romney has these values, regardless of what you might read and hear.
I hope this message has made some of you think.

This article is RIGHT ON!! Of course Mitt Romney isn't perfect, but guess what, neither are you self-righteous Christians. And believe it or not, you don't have all the answers on theology or history - you weren't there either! That's exactly why you should be tolerant of other religions and be able to appreciate and respect Mitt Romney for the man of prinicple and character that he is. Isn't that what religion is supposed to instill in us? Well, Mitt's Mormon faith sure as hell instilled it into him more than Huckabee's Christian faith did for Mike. Mitt admitted over and over, in public, that he believed he was wrong on his initial (political) position on abortion. He never hid from it. I don't want a leader who can't learn and grow through experience and knowledge gained.
Mitt Romney is, without a doubt, the best choice and wisest choice for VP as far as McCain is concerned. I don't need to reiterate all of his positives including the states and electoral votes he would bring; plus fundraising ability. I read all the comments thus far and appreciate all of the supportive comments for Mitt Romney. To all of the Christians who hide behind your ignorant rhetoric to disguise what can only be pathologic narcissism, open your closed, intolerant minds. Look at what the world around you teaches you everyday - life is not black and white, it's shades of gray - even on Sunday. Support a man who embodies a life that you believe everyone should live. His beliefs may be a little different than yours, but in substance he is not. He could do this country a tremendous amount of good. I'm pretty sure he would like to help even the Christians who seem to hate him. I also believe he would do it without asking you to convert.

Romneys Mormon religion doesnt have ANYTHING to do with why I cannot stomach the guy. If you want to talk about change;, Romney has done some about-face changes throughout his career. He has changed his rhetoric just too many times in order to tell whatever crowd he is speaking to, what they want to hear. I honestly do not know what he stands for or what his honest-to-goodness viewpoint is on anything! What does this man really think and where does he stand? It may be one thing one day, and the next another....which leads me to conclude that the guy is a genuine FAKE!

I am surprised no mention was made as Joseph Lieberman for Vice President. It would be a bold move on McCain's part, but might be enough to woo some of the Hilary Clinton disgruntled to vote for a McCain-Lieberman ticket.
I voted for Romney and think he was the best candidate in the field, but I am not certain he would be the best vice presidential choice. With so many people saying they won't vote for McCain with Romney on his ticket (and so many of us Romney supporters saying the same about Mike Huckabee), I am not sure he is the best pick for McCain.
While I agree that if we could get Romney in office it would be great for the country's economy, he has to get there first and McCain already has enough problems with conservatives (this one included who was raised in Arizona) that can't stand him and are thinking of voting the Libertarian ticket.
If you are McCain, why not side-step the issue altogether and get Romney in as a high ranking cabinet member, which gets Romney's experience into the administration without all the electability baggage.

all of you huck-haters are jerks... you only like romney b/c of his money. the love of money have sold our souls to china and other countries while ours is going up in smoke.... I can not believe that some of your comments are so nasty. lets look at this:
Romney-also known as FEE-FEE- Nearly bankrupting mass with his hillary style universal mandated health care, his state was the first to pass Gay Marriage, He raised more taxes oops I'm sorry fees in on term that huckabee raised in his 4 terms, he gives away 50.00 abortion gift certificates to anyone that wants one, not too long agao he was a reagan and bush hater, now that he want to be president-he wants to run as a conservative and you blind people that support him only do so b/c he got a degree from harvard? this sounds like a really uneducated reason...
Now lets look at huckabee, his schools went from # 48 - 8, roads were fixed, taxes were cut, and a nearly 1 billion dollar surplus was left when he left office. That's what I call real executive leadership and experience...Every reason that you idiots pointed out had nothing to do with his leadership in ark, but everything to do with his religion...Romney is not a christian, christianity does not say that the devil and jesus are brothers... it seems like you people just hate him b/c of his religion. Huckabee has excellent debating skills, even far better than that used car salesman MITT FLIP...Mitt could not carry no states in the south and every state that he competitive he lost to mccain in the north. he is a loser and no one wants him...He is a typical politian that reminds me of the guy that laid me off and I will never vote for MITT so all you MITTEN KITTENS that keep trying to demonize huck b/c of what he eats, or b/c of this new role on tv, you are just upset b/c he, unlike your candidate has a better shot! Congrads Huck! I support you b/c you support the people, NOT WALL street like WILLARD! MCCain/ HUCK 2008!

I'm so tired of seeing this arguement (if you can call it that) about Romney and his success:
"Romney made his millions by buying up failing companies, selling off pieces of the that company, laying off employees, and then selling the rest. This was not true in every case but was true in several of them."
You clowns out there that actually believe this is a reason not to support Romney are dilusional. Please note that Bain Capital bought up "failing businesses" not great profitable businesses. Please tell me what is so wrong with buying companies, cutting out the unnecessary/lazy workers, and cutting out departments. You guys act like its a bad thing to improve businesses, cut employees that aren't money makers, and creat businessed that are more efficient. It takes a talented, intelligent character to successfully do this. I love a country that encourages hard work, innovation, and efficiency. Quit acting like we owe the general public jobs if they can't hack it. The fact remains that a lot of businesses are poorly run.....it sounds like something else that I know of.....the U.S. Government. We need a man like Romney to find his way to Washington to clean up that garbage business. It is for this reason, among many others, that I supported Romney in the primaries. In the business world it is all about efficiency. I can imagine Washington is shaking in their boots at the thought of Romney coming to town to clean up their pork barrell spending, fiscal irresponsibility, and mis-managed and ill-funded programs. It;s time for Romney to clean up this "failing business" and create a financial powerhouse out of America.

Give me a break I'm tired of all you ignorant haters! Read and internalize the Bible for yourselves, read the news and do your own research. Stop reading anti this and anti that. Get educated and learn. It will open your mind to an optimistic, tolerant, loving attitude towards yourself, others (even Mormons), and your country. Wake up from the lull you find yourselves in. Go Mitt! There is no one with more integrity, intelligence, and capability available for VP.

It's hard to believe that the same old rediculous aguments keep getting brought up by the Mitt Romney haters. I'm glad to see that most commenters here seem to be quit sane. Ofcourse Mitt Romney was the biggest fighter against gay marriage in Massachusetts. Everyone knows that it was the liberal Massachusetts supreme court that legalized gay marriage, not Mitt Romney. It's the same situation with the "50 dollar" abortions. This was not of Mitt Romneys doing, it was the law that dictated that it be included. The argument that Mitt Romney donated money to planned parenthood is misleading. His wife donated 100 dollars nearly 20 years ago as a favor to a friend for planned parenthood. And I love how everyone puts quotation marks around the word "fees" when trying to argue that Mitt Romney raised taxes in Massachuesetts. Fees simply do not equal taxes. The fees that were raised were due for an increase. Ofcourse Romney balanced the budget and left a surplus in just the four years he was govenor without raising any taxes of any kind. This was a huge accomplishment.

It's clear that Mitt Romney is the most intelligent and competent leader: He respects the democratic process, can and will radically improve the economy of any place he runs and passionately believes in what he's doing enough to invest millions from his own accounts to achieve it.
However, what's interesting is that Romney polarizes the party like no one else. I haven't heard anybody say, "Romney? Meh. I could take him or leave him."
Will the votes he gains be enough to overcome the votes he'll lose?
