BEEHIVE FIRST TO PREDICT BEING MORMON WOULD HELP ROMNEY
More than a year ago, the Beehive News responded to Columnist Robert Novak's indirect assertion that Mitt Romney could not get elected President of the United States because of his Mormon faith. Novak underestimated the negatives of being a Mormon politician and missed the positives and the Beehive pointed out the many ways that being Mormon might help Romney.
Now we see that Romney's religion has helped him more than it has hurt. To start, the fundraising machine has been very active where Mormons account for over 15 percent of his contributions. His contributions were much higher than any other candidate and as a result his candidacy had to be taken seriously by the national media.
Later, controversy over a Mormon speaking at fundamentalist Christian Liberty University's graduation ceremonies caused the national media to write many sympathetic articles which resulted in Romney receiving a tacit endorsement by the late Jerry Falwell, as Falwell had to justify having a religious outsider speak at his conservative university.
Most recently, in a twist of fate, Rev. Al Sharpton found himself being attacked as a hypocrite after making an off-hand slur against Mormons in a debate with an athiest. In that debate Sharpton inplied that the Mormons did not believe in God. Sharpton was quick to apologize to the Mormons (but not to Romney) and even came to Salt Lake City to learn more about the Mormons as a means of making up for the gaff. Of course, all of this was well covered by the national media.
Now political pundits are saying the "Mormon thing" has had its run and it doesn't look like it will hurt Romney after all. Indeed, after spending some of that campaign money on commercials in key states, Romney has surged to the top of the popularity contest and is now well ahead of all other candidates.
We're not proud at the Beehive News, but it is hard to ignore that we got this one right -- so listen up, we are about to make another bold prediction.
Our next early prediction is based on Fred Thompson.
